In our recent update of the Veo Camera app, we’ve introduced key improvements designed to enhance both the mobile viewing experience and the flexibility of settings. Signe Hjortshøj Thomsen, the product designer behind these changes, shares insights into the motivation behind the update and how it’s tailored to meet the real-world needs of the Veo community.

With a focus on making it easier for coaches and players to find and share key plays, as well as providing more customization options, these updates aim to create a faster, smoother, and more intuitive experience for everyone using the app.

Why was it important to update the mobile experience, and what key improvements were you aiming to deliver for the Veo community?

We’ve made some exciting improvements to the Veo Camera App, giving both the viewing experience and settings options a major boost. We know how crucial it is to find the best play from the game as fast as possible to either rewatch it, show it to the team, or share it with the world.

In the past, viewing uploaded recordings sent you to a mobile browser. We knew this wasn’t ideal, so we moved it into the app, making it easier to view the game and find key plays. Our goal is to enhance the viewing experience by focusing on key plays and simple navigation so you can get to the highlights faster and more effectively.

Moreover, we’ve been focusing on flexibility and customization to enhance the app experience for all – starting with expanded settings options. Now, it’s possible to choose whether to auto-connect to the camera, select dark or light mode, and set personalized recording preferences. With options like adding recording preferences, it’ll be a more streamlined recording experience every time.

We’ve also introduced a “What’s new” section to ensure everyone is aware of new things happening in the app and how to benefit from them. Overall, we've focused on delivering greater flexibility and transparency to users, aiming to create a better app experience.

How did you incorporate feedback from the community into the designs?

We’ve been talking to a lot of our users, looking into the behavioral data in the app, and listening to members of the Veo communities. This helped us set the direction of what to build and how to build it.

From the app's data, we see that many users watch their recordings on their phones or in the browser, which we know isn’t optimal. We want to help them. We’ve been talking to the community to understand the needs and goals for this behavior, and hopefully, we have made it a whole lot easier now.

Collecting all the feedback we’ve gained from our customers in the past years we see a clear pattern, they want more flexibility. In the past, we predefined several settings, but now we’re giving users more control to tailor their experience. We’re gradually rolling out these customizable settings to make our product more adaptable.

What design elements did you prioritize to ensure that the new look feels intuitive and elegant on mobile devices?

For the viewing experience, we've made a strong effort to keep the design consistent with our other products. This familiarity should make it easier and more intuitive for users to navigate the new player. By identifying our users' key needs and goals, we’ve focused the design on a few essential elements, making the user interface straightforward and easy to use.

When building new things in the app or optimizing what we have, we constantly focus on consistency and simplicity. We know that the app is often used in a hectic environment, so our goal is to minimize friction as much as possible. With straightforward operation and clear designs, we aim to make match-day usage quick and effortless.

How do you think the update will make life easier for coaches and players when using the app?

We hope the users are getting a better experience. When coaches and players are rewatching their matches, they should find it easy and intuitive to find key plays and share them.

The increased flexibility of the product will let all users set their own specific needs and preferences, and the enhanced communication about new features in the app, with clear guidance on what they are and how to make the most of them, will help get the most out the Veo Camera app.
