With a breathtaking volley that left jaws on the floor and the internet in awe, Welsh player Mason Evans from Ynyshir Albions FC not only etched his name into amateur football history but also became the inaugural winner of Veo's People’s Puskas award.
Garnering over 12 million views and applause from icons like Robin van Persie, Evans' story is proof that magic lives on every pitch, no matter how humble. Veo caught up with the Welsh wonder to reflect on his stunning goal, his journey since, and the advice he has for those looking to follow in his footsteps.
Reflecting on the journey to the People’s Puskas award, Evans expressed both humility and belief in his abilities.
"As the first winner of the People’s Puskas, it was an honor to be nominated in the first place. As the competition went further, I became more confident that I’d be victorious in winning this award," he said before describing the feeling when the ball hit the net.
“As I hit the ball, I actually didn’t see it hit the net, but as I landed, I knew there was only one outcome. The atmosphere when it hit the net will be something I remember forever. I’ve never heard a grassroots game become so electric until I scored that goal.”
Don’t overthink it
When asked if winning the award made him feel like a role model for lower-league players, Evans was quick to dismiss the idea. However, he admits that the recognition has made him more confident on the pitch.
“Nothing drastic has changed for me, but one thing I’ve done more is strike the shot. You won’t believe what will go in. If you don’t risk and take the gamble, you won’t reap the rewards,” the Welsh player explained.
The People’s Puskas award recognizes the best goal captured on a Veo camera. While it’s essential to have the camera recording from the sidelines, the 2023 winner shared a key piece of advice for future contenders: don’t overthink it.
“The first thing I’d say is don’t think about the camera. Don’t put pressure on yourself. It will come naturally. All the best things come naturally. It’s key that you invest in a camera and take it to every game to give yourself the best possible chance to be involved in this campaign.”
With such an incredible goal under his belt, does Evans have a specific type of goal he dreams of scoring in the new season?
“Nothing will beat my goal last year, so I haven’t really thought about any certain goals. I just want to recreate that feeling from that day again. That really reminded me why I play this sport. I just hope this award stays in Wales,” he concluded.
